Empowering Communication: Neurodiversity-Affirming Autism Services

At the Childhood Apraxia & Speech Therapy Centre every child’s unique way of experiencing and interacting with the world is honored and supported. Our mission is to provide compassionate, neurodiversity-affirming therapy that empowers autistic and neurodiverse children to communicate in ways that are most natural and effective for them. Led by a highly experienced speech-language pathologist, our practice is dedicated to fostering meaningful, authentic connections and building communication through a Total Communication Approach. This means we honour and accept any way your child chooses to communicate and we don’t value one mode (like mouth words) over other ways of communicating.

What Makes Us Different?

We believe that communication is a fundamental right, not a privilege. Our approach is grounded in the principles of neurodiversity, recognizing that autistic individuals have unique strengths, perspectives, and ways of processing information. We reject deficit-based models and instead embrace strengths-based, individualized support that enhances self-expression, autonomy, and confidence.

Our services are tailored to support children in ways that respect their natural communication styles, whether that means spoken language, augmentative and alternative communication (AAC), gestures, typing/writing, or other forms of expression. We create a safe, affirming space where each child can explore and develop their communication skills without pressure to conform to neurotypical expectations.

Our Approach: The Total Communication Model

Every child is different, and so is their preferred way of communicating. Our Total Communication Approach embraces all forms of communication and provides individualized support to help children build meaningful interactions in the way that best suits them. This may include:

By incorporating multiple communication modes, we empower children to express themselves in ways that are authentic, effective, and affirming.

Our Core Services

We offer a range of specialized services designed to meet each child’s unique communication and developmental needs:

Speech-Language Therapy

Our experienced speech-language pathologist provides individualized therapy sessions focused on developing communication skills that align with the child's strengths and needs. We use evidence-based practices, while also adapting therapy to ensure a sensory-friendly and engaging experience. We have clinicians with different specialties, and so you won’t have to transfer to another clinic when it’s time to switch the focus on therapy. Our clinicians collaborate and support each other, and when necessary your care may be transferred to another team member, e.g. to one of our highly trained clinicians who specialize in speech sound disorders.

AAC Support and Implementation

For non- or minimally-speaking children, AAC can be a powerful tool for self-expression. We help guide families who need to access initial AAC devices and tools and train families and communication partners in the use of AAC systems. Our focus is ensuring that each child has access to communication methods that suit them best.

Parent and Caregiver Coaching

We believe that families play a crucial role in communication development. Our caregiver coaching services provide parents and loved ones with strategies to support their child's communication journey in everyday life.

Social-Emotional Support

We provide guidance and modelling to help clients and families build resiliency and co- and self-regulation skills, which are often foundational to communication development. This includes close collaboration with your child’s Occupational Therapist.

Self-Advocacy and Advocacy for Change

We strive to empower children to be able to best self-advocate for themselves, to be able to communicate what they want, when they want, how they want. We also encourage families, educators, and the community to think about autism from a different lens to build an inclusive world. Actually autistics and the autistic community are the true experts and we listen to their voices to then help empower our clients and families.

A Strengths-Based, Affirming Environment

At The Childhood Apraxia & Speech Therapy Centre, we view autism as a natural variation of human neurology, not something that needs to be “fixed” or “normalized.”  We view autism as a type of neurodivergence, which includes differences in: learning and thinking; feeling; speech, language, and communication; attention and cognition; play; and sensory processing. We do not see autism through a medical model. However, autistic children still require support to grow their communication skills. So our therapy is designed to:

  • Build upon each child’s strengths and special interests (we love learning about what brings joy to your child!).
  • Foster self-confidence and self-advocacy.
  • Respect and honor sensory needs.
  • Promote autonomy in communication choices.
  • Support each child in expressing themselves in a way that feels right for them.

Our therapy space is welcoming, sensory-friendly, and designed to accommodate a variety of communication styles. We strive to create an environment where every child feels safe, understood, and celebrated.

Why Choose a Neurodiversity-Affirming Speech-Language Pathologist?

Many traditional therapy approaches for autistic children prioritize spoken language above all else, sometimes leading to frustration, autistic burnout, and/or autistic masking. At The Childhood Apraxia & Speech Therapy Centre, we proudly do things differently. We recognize that all forms of communication are valid and that each child has a unique way of expressing themselves. Our therapy is child-led, respectful, and empowering.

When you work with us, you can expect:

  • A compassionate, highly experienced speech-language pathologist who understands neurodiversity.
  • A collaborative approach that involves families, educators, and other professionals to support the child holistically.
  • Therapy sessions that prioritize joy, connection, and authenticity.
  • A commitment to ongoing learning and advocacy to ensure we provide the most affirming and effective support.

Getting Started

We know that seeking support for your child’s communication can feel overwhelming, and we’re here to help every step of the way. Our process is simple and family-centered:

  1. Initial Consultation – We begin with an in-clinic visit to understand your child’s unique strengths, challenges, and goals. Starting to build rapport, trust, and genuine connection happens the second your child walks in!
  2. Assessment – We create thorough, individualized plans based on formal and informal assessment findings (sometimes over several visits) to determine the best communication strategies and supports.
  3. Personalized Therapy Plan – Together, we create a therapy plan that aligns with your child’s needs and preferences. Most children are seen for weekly 45 minute therapy sessions.
  4. Ongoing Support and Growth – We continuously adapt our approach as your child grows and develops new skills.
